The 74th Northern Ireland International Ploughing Championships, #niploughing74 in association with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Council took place on Friday 29th September & Saturday 30th September 2017 near Donaghcloney, Co Down. These championships showcase over 50 qualified competitors from NI and ROI competing in seven different classes: World Style Conventional, World Style Reversible, Vintage Class, Horse Class, Horse Style & Appearance Class, Young Farmers Class & Ladies Class. The Ploughing Championships is an ideal meeting place for anyone involved in the agricultural industry and their families to see top ploughmen show off their skills for the honour of being crowned a Northern Ireland Champion. The event included trade exhibits, Young Farmers Club competitions, plus many attractions for the 1000's of spectators to enjoy. This year, as well as the usual attractions at the NI Ploughing Championships, the 6 Nations Vintage Ploughing Championships took place at the same time with top vintage competitors from England, Scotland, Wales, NI, ROI and the Isle of Man. There were lots for all the family including exhibitions and trade stands, children s activities and other demonstrations. We were delighted to welcome the World Famous Grasslads, who put on a display at the championships in Donaghcloney. At the Prize Distribution, held in the Banville House Hotel, Chairman Wilson Holden said “We enjoyed yet another successful event and fantastic weather in Donaghcloney with competitors, spectators and exhibitors welcomed from all over the UK and Ireland. This provided a fantastic opportunity for competitors and exhibitors to provide a great showcase for the agricultural industry." NIPA have a very successful record with 7 World Ploughing Champions winning the Golden Plough on 10 occasions, 13 podium place positions in the past 15 years and competitors have also taken the European Ploughing Champion title 6 times. NIPA is the governing body for ploughing in Northern Ireland. There are 21 affiliated ploughing societies across NI with approx 500 members. Ploughing matches run from September to February across the country each year. NIPA successfully hosted the European Reversible Ploughing Championships in Drumahoe in 2012 and World Contest in Ballykelly in 2004.
